Pickin' Poppin' Cherries
What an amazing day today. I had planned to take my oldest son Cherry picking the day they opened the farm. Picking fruits of all types is second nature to me. Growing up in the Central Valley of California we are surrounded by farms. Our home was no different. We grew up with Oranges, Lemons, Avocados, Cherries, Pecans, Persimmon's, Chiles, all on our acre of property. We even had goats, and chickens. I remember telling people that we had goats and they just looked at me like I was crazy since we lived within a major city but on a country parcel where it was allowed.
Moving on, since its easier to take one toddler vs. two, I took my oldest. Had I had my hubby with me we would have all gone, but how mamas with more then two take all kids out on their own is unbelievable to me; I am not that talented. When we got there, he kept telling me: "mommy where are we" pretending he was in a forest. He was so cute, repeating that he wanted to get all the cherries, but at $3.50 a lb., we are good with 2lbs especially since I know I will be the only one eating them. Even though he wont eat cherries, he kept saying "Mommy cherries are so delicious" to which I said: "yes baby they are". He had a blast trying to pick them correctly (with the stem) like I showed him, like my parents showed me. I asked him if he needed help and he said: "no mommy, I'm a big boy," to which I said, "yes baby you are".
While walking to the car he asked me if he could have some ice cream. I thought what an amazing idea, lets have some ice cream and put one of our cherries on top that we picked. "Of course my love what do you say to an ice cream picnic?" On the way home I took a wrong turn and ended up next to a flower stand where I picked up some sunflowers. He actually picked them out such a gentleman just like he's daddy. We got back in our car and headed home where I did an impromptu ice cream picnic with all the fixings and topped it off with our cherries, fresh lemonade made from lemons from my moms house and of course he's dinosaurs.
All in all such a fun day, picking him up from school early and surprising him with our special mommy and me trip. Special thanks to Nunn Family Farms in Brentwood California! Looking forward to our next day out coming soon! Thanks for reading what do you do with your little ones that brings back fond memories?
