DIY Cotton Candy Costume
Hey Y’all! Happy Friday, hope this finds you well. I am writing this blog for all those you have asked how I made. I want to say that this isn’t my original idea its but I will also repeat the steps here. You will need the following:
Poly-Fil
Spray Adhesive
White Shirt/onesie etc. (I had my kiddos in xs women’s shirts because they where going to wear Long Sleeve Jammies to create the “longer look” if you have a girl you can use tights, you want your jammies to match the color you will be using for cotton candy. I also liked the Jammies because kids with sensory issues like mine would find it more bearable).
Floral Spray Paint DO NOT USE Regular SPRAY PAINT- this is imperative. Floral spray paint drys in like five minutes vs spray paint, plus spray paint stinks and the floral one the smells goes away after it drys.
White poster board (get it from the dollar tree).
Frayed velvet ribbon 2 inches, I got mine on Etsy.
Old newspaper
Stapler
About an hour of time.
Okay begin with the Poly-Fil pull it apart you want it to be think enough so you cant see through it. like clumps. fill the news paper with different clumps and start spraying. let it dry and repeat, depending on the size of shirt you have you will have to do more or less. Always add extra you will need it for the hat and to fill in here and there. A good way to know how much you will need is to lay it on the shirt etc itself and then spray paint.
Once you have all your Poly-Fil dried start glueing it on to the garment. I laid it outside on our picnic table since the smell of the spray adhesive is strong as well. Continue glueing until the garment is completely covered on both sides. Then you will need to hang it and see if you missed any spots and fill accordingly. Once it is done and completely covered, lay it down flat until you are ready to wear. Since its on a knit jersey (shirt, onesie etc) it will “grow” if hung, so it will stretch out and you don’t want that, I learned this and had to end up sewing the shoulders and back of ours.
After you competed that move on to the cone. If you want the cone exaggerated like mine then you will most likely use 3/4 of an entire poster board bc you need the height. Roll the poster board into a cone and staple. Using left over Poly-Fil, apply to the outside base of cone until you have covered two inches of it or more if you want. Staple two long pieces of ribbon on both sides of the cone. Measure your ribbon before you cut and make sure it will tie easily around your head, then cut. Your costume should be complete Hooray!
